Allegany County Tourism, in partnership with the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority (CPPDA), seeks proposals for a brand audit, development, and implementation strategy for the Canal Place Heritage Area, as part of a joint Marketing Grant project, awarded through the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority. The brand audit and development process will serve as the foundation for future Canal Place Heritage Area marketing initiatives, and the brand will be carefully developed with heritage area growth and expansion in mind.

The heritage area contains a robust portfolio of heritage attractions but currently lacks the brand and positioning necessary to neatly package and promote the heritage area to the traveler. The name Canal Place Heritage Area currently describes a physical location within the heritage area, but with the program’s plans for expansion, the current name and brand fails to adequately tell the entire program area’s story of transportation history and heritage.

The brand audit and development process will draw together the overarching themes of the heritage area and provide a relevant brand identity necessary to move forward with strategic marketing initiatives. This process will also help Allegany County Tourism and the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority take inventory of current marketing initiatives, assess their effectiveness, and streamline messaging so that heritage tourism efforts are supported and strengthened rather than duplicated.

The selected vendor will work with the project’s Brand Development Committee, comprised of
representatives from Allegany County Tourism, CPPDA, and heritage area stakeholders, throughout the project.
