March 28, 2019 (Cumberland, MD) – At its bi-weekly meeting, the Board of County Commissioners of Allegany County announced the launch of a program providing summer internship opportunities for students at Frostburg State University and Allegany College of Maryland for 2019. In its second year,the Commissioners’ Fellowship Program is a 12-week summer internship program with Allegany County Government. The program, which is a partnership with Frostburg State University and Allegany College of Maryland, provides real-life work experience for students attending these institutions of higher learning.
Selected students will work under the direction of the County Administrator and other county staff to develop an understanding of local government. County government will work the students on projects and policy proposals that will ultimately be presented to the County Commissioners at the end of the student’s internship. Selected students will be paid a stipend of $2,000 for their participation in the program.
Fellowship participant from 2018, Samantha Vega, who will soon be graduating from Allegany College of Maryland, noted the invaluable experience as one of the inaugural program’s first participants . She stated, “Having the ability to ask questions about our government and grow as a person is an opportunity I don’t think I could have gotten anywhere else.” Carter Imes, a student at Frostburg State and also a 2018 program participant, added, “The connections and networking that I was able to experience are unmatched. Because of the Fellowship, I now work for Delegate Wendell Beitzel.”
In order to be considered, the student must be attending either Frostburg State University or Allegany College of Maryland; must be a rising Junior or Senior (or have at least 30 credit hours at Allegany College of Maryland) in the summer of participation; possess an overall GPA of 2.7 or above; and, must be available to work between May 27 and August 9, 2019.
