The Allegany County Department of Economic & Community Development is developing a proposed Comprehensive Update to the County Zoning District Map following the adoption of the 2014 Allegany County Comprehensive Plan and associated recommendations.
The Planning Commission of Allegany County will hold a Public Hearing on the Comprehensive Update to the County Zoning District Map on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. in Room 100 of the County Office Building at 701 Kelly Road, Cumberland. All affected property owners according to the Tax Map are being notified by letter of the proposed rezoning.
On March 9, 2017, the Allegany County Board of County Commissioners adopted a new zoning code. This new zoning code established new classifications in order to merge the LaVale districts with the County districts. This action also established the LaVale Overlay District in order to preserve some characteristics of LaVale. Zoning districts were not changed as part of this new zoning code.
“Updating the map is a housekeeping exercise,” said Angela R. Patterson, P.E., Land Use & Planning Engineer. “Our goal is to have our planning and zoning documents in order so that viable projects do not experience unnecessary delays.”
“These zoning changes will allow the vision for many of these properties to come to fruition. I thank Angie for her leadership on this project and other County personnel for their efforts,” said Jeffrey S. Barclay, Director of Economic & Community Development. “Some of the proposed changes support the potential to develop much needed market-based housing and the opportunity to develop new vibrant commercial spaces.”
Of the 26 proposed rezonings, two of them (Map #55 and Map #35) were amended and reintroduced on September 27, 2017. Property owners affected by the proposed amendments will receive a second letter and a new map showing these amended proposals.
